Projects & Liaison Groups

North Carolina Artists Exhibition – In 1965 RFAS adopted the Artists Exhibition featuring Wake County artists as its first project. In 1993 the exhibition was opened to artists, including college students and faculty, from the Triangle counties: Durham, Orange and Wake. Since 1997 it has grown into an annual juried exhibition for artists from North Carolina. During the 30th exhibition and anniversary celebration in 2008, the project was officially named the North Carolina Artists Exhibition.

Carolina Ballet – The Ballet Committee of RFAS supports the Carolina Ballet through service. This is accomplished by providing volunteers to help the Ballet in its programs, outreach, education and encouraging continued support from the community.

Choral Celebration – A project begun in 1999, elementary school choral groups and their directors are offered an opportunity to perform and share their choral skills with other schools and the public in a non-competitive setting. The choral groups perform at Meymandi Hall, home of the North Carolina Symphony. Choral directors receive comments from qualified adjudicators, enabling them to improve future performances.

North Carolina Executive Mansion – The Executive Mansion docent program began in May of 1966, when RFAS received a request for help from Mrs. Dan K. Moore, then First Lady of North Carolina. Docents lead tours for the mansion and the gardens each spring and fall.

Gregg Museum of Art & Design – N. C. State University – Opportunities for volunteers from RFAS include compiling information on artists and on objects in the collection, working in the collection with the curator, preparing for upcoming exhibitions and assisting with entertainment for visiting artists.

Literary Contest – The Literary Contest was launched as a new project of RFAS in November 1978 as a short story contest among Wake County high schools, juried by professionals and featuring significant prize awards. The next year, final judges conducted a workshop for student winners, and the workshop has continued to be held each year since.

North Carolina Museum of Art – RFAS members have had strong ties to the North Carolina Museum of Art since the Society was organized in 1965. Most of the organizing members were touring docents at the Museum. Members serve as touring docents, guides in the Museum Park and volunteers at the information desk, in the library, and at museum events.  Link to a NCMA Park Walking Tour Guide.

North Carolina Museum of History – Since 1974, RFAS members have supported the North Carolina Museum of History. Volunteer opportunities include interpreting the past to children and adults by conducting tours, demonstrating crafts, preparing museum exhibits, researching special projects and staffing the gift shop and the information desk.

North Carolina Symphony – RFAS members have been serving as volunteers with the North Carolina Symphony since 1986. When the North Carolina Symphony League was formed in 2003, RFAS was represented by six of the nine founding members. Today, RFAS Symphony volunteers serve as greeters and assist young, area musicians in the Ovations program, mini-concerts performed by school-age children prior to the Symphony’s classical series performances.
